Volunteer in Latin America
You have come to the right place at the right time! We have an
excellent program that sends teens and young adult volunteers
to Latin America to work on various service projects. Come
to one of our information nights (and bring your parents!) to be held
in September. Check back in August for dates and times.
Each year a select group of volunteers spends six to eight weeks in a
host country, living with a host family, working on different
public health projects. Countries where volunteers will live and work
in the summer of 2008 include Costa Rica, Dominican Republic,
Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Uruguay, and Paraguay.
Throughout the year our chapter prepares its volunteers for
their Latin America experiences through training in cross-cultural
sensitivity, networking, project management, group dynamics, technical
skills, personal health & safety, and the culture of Latin America.
In June, our chapter volunteers begin traveling to their assigned
countries. Once in country, they join with volunteers from other
chapters across the United States. Volunteers are then placed, in
partnerships of two to four, in rural or semi-rural communities to live
for the summer.
Life-long friendships are built between AMIGOS volunteers and
their adopted communities. Thousands of young people have learned
invaluable lessons about cultural differences, community service, and
their own ability to lead.
